So by now, you’ve all heard the news of the launch of the new syllabus but what does this really mean for teachers?

Well, it means that we have 2 years to transition to this new syllabus, although for many of us we will be starting as of next year especially if we have new students enrolling in exams.   The unfortunate reality of teaching from set courses like the AMEB is the constant expense.

Unlike previous years, the technical work book is now split up between Preliminary – Grade 4 and Grade 5 – Grade 8.  Apart from scales and arpeggios (which have been reduced), there are now custom-composed technical exercises that are examinable (as well as optional extras for students to try their hands at). In the higher grades students are now also expected to be able to play polyrhythmic scales and chord progressions.

There’s also a new sight reading book for pianists and general knowledge of the pieces (as seen in the handbook) now reflects the language of university level music which is definitely a good thing as we work towards a more common language and clear up confusion between identifying chords and cadences.
